Do you use Facebook? I do. And I have noticed something remarkable that has been happening. Many of my 'friends' in the Broadway community have changed their Facebook names to include Hussein as their middle name. There is even a group on Facebook called My Name is Hussein. So I did a search of the name Hussein on the site and it came back with more than 500 results. As I scanned through the first 200 names, it appeared that people all over the country are adding Hussein as their middle name. It's an amazing phenomenon. What does it mean?
I think people are saying one thing, let's talk about the issues, not the superficial bs that takes up far too much of the conversation in any campaign. They are saying, we're all Hussein's, McCain's, Palin's (God forbid), Biden's and what matters is what you stand for and how you can make a difference in the world. It reminds me of the myth of the Danish King, Christian X, and the Danes themselves wearing the Jewish star during WWII in defiance of the Nazi requirement that the Jews wore such an emblem. (And yes it is just a myth as neither the King nor the people of Denmark wore the star, but they did rescue 7500 Jews in sending them to Sweden before the Nazi plan to deport them all to a concentration camp. Bravo.)
There is an interesting article in the NY Times about the phenomenom. Identifying with something, or someone is very important. It is, in my humble opinion, the key element to any successful theatrical experience. When we feel for or relate to the characters of a show, the story becomes personal and resonates deeply. That seems to be what's happening with Obama and his campaign. Fingers crossed.
