There is an interesting article in the Guardian about the timeliness of the current Broadway production of All My Sons. "Much of the show's success derives from the same desire for clarity, truth-telling and America's overdue reckoning with itself that has helped land Obama the White House", writes Matt Wolf. He writes from the perspective of a Brit, but having been born and raised in the US he still gets America. AMS takes on a journey through a twisted reality based on lies and a sliver of hope held onto by a thread of delusion. When the truth is revealed in the end, the catharsis in the audience is palpable. We all sigh in relief that we have been given the respect by the author to let the truth come out.
It is a shame that we have had to wait so long for the truths of our own government to start to surface. We have not been seeing the truth, even when it sat right in front of us for 8 years. The fact that John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate cemented my perception of the GOP (insert Africa jokes here). They have total and complete disdain for the American people. They believe they can do whatever they like, whenever they like and get away with it. Palin is a perfect example. Nominate someone completely unqualified for the V.P. post, then tell everyone who questions the choice, "you are wrong." Did they actually believe we would fall for it!?
We, unfortunately gave them reason to continue with their hatred of America. For 8 years, we lived under an administration that tore massive holes in the Constitution and flaunted their lies and deceit without even an iota of remorse or acknowledgment. As Matt Wolf mentions, it is is very revealing that Broadway has not been presenting works which reflect our current situation. It feels like we have been afraid to look at ourselves in the mirror. Now, thankfully, we can begin to look forward, and not back. Not that we shouldn't carefully and thoroughly look back at the willful destruction the Bush administration left behind so as to learn not to allow that to happen again. But then, we are no the brightest people and often don't learn from our mistakes.
The consequences for these years of lies, deceit and contempt are overdue and have arrived. America said, ENOUGH! The GOP got their asses whooped in the election and for good reason. We have a new President who brings a fresh voice and attitude to governance. Amen.
